The horrific Tsunami

November 2nd, 2006 by vivi in Uncategorized · No Comments

The year was 2004, the date was the 26th of December. This was the most powerful earthquake in over forty years. This tsunami was known as the Sumatra-Andaman earthquake. Deep, down it struck under the Indian Ocean off Sumatra. The earthquake created massive tsunamis that tore apart villages, and seaside resorts in eleven countries. Some of these countries were parts of Sri Lanka,Indonesia,India and Thailand. Many people, animals, trees, buildings and cars were swept away by 30-foot-high walls of water. At 7:58 am, the USA detected an earthquake in the Indian Ocean. The measuring on the Richter scale was 9.

Fifty million years ago, the Indo-Australian plate began to collide with the Eurasian plate, it moves in the direction of North, 5cms per year. After some years, the stress between the 2 plates builds up. When there’s too much stress, the energy gets released and it causes an earthquake. In the first week of the disaster, the death toll rised enormously on a daily basis.Indonesia, was hit the hardest. At that time, the number of dead people were above 150, 000.

Originally, the world wide death toll was over 275, 000 with thousands missing, but now analysis combined lists a total of 229, 866 people lost! This includes 186,983 dead and 42,883 missing.

This tsunami, is known around the globe as the Asian Tsunami and also the Boxing Day Tsunami in Australia, Canada, the UK and New Zealand.

The 2004 tsunami effected our world as there were many people dead and missing. There were also economic damage.  A great amount of humanitarian aid needed because of the large damage of infrastructure and shortages of food and water. People were also worried about the remaining people whose houses had been washed away, leaving them in starvation and that diseases would spread easier from the dead bodies around them.

The Asian Tsumami, was really sudden to me. Before that happened,I didnt know what a tsunami was and now I do. It’s really a horrific thing and to see so many people who lost their lives. Hopefully, it will never happen again.

I think, the tsumani effected the future because now, some tourists don’t want to go to the area that the tsunami hit as they are scared there would be another one coming soon.

The fun International Day!

July 20th, 2006 by vivi in Uncategorized · 1 Comment

On the 19th of July, Carlingford High School had there International Day.

It took up periods three to five.

Stalls were set up and all the students attended school in mufti, some even wearing their traditional clothing.

After recess, everyone moved to the hall and sat in the seats provided. Lights were turned off and the fashion parades and performances were about to begin.

From the stage, I could see lots of different colours. I saw traditional Indian dresses, Chinese dresses, Australian fashion, kimonos, Korean dresses and lots more.

A young man sang a sad Korean love song about breaking up. A primary school Indian girl from Roselea performed an outstanding Indian dance involving fast movements and lots of jewelry. Tae from year 7 played with a Korean flute which produced a beautiful sound. A play by the Japanese group was about a peach. Audience clapped enthusiastically as each performance ended and started. Indian dances made my eyes shine because of the different colours on the dresses. A Taiwanese couple sang some Taiwanese songs which sounded good. A senior girl sang a traditional Chinese song. The USA group did some cheerleading with light blue and white pom poms. Also the Indian drums were played.

After all the performances, the students had free time to go around the school and look at the stalls.

The Japanese stall sold Green-tea ice-cream, anime posters, chocolate flavoured Pocky sticks, they also had karaoke and okinomiyaki which was a Japanese pancake.

Germany had mango, chocolate and strawberry ice cream.

French sold lolly bags and pancakes with maple syrup.

China had fried noodles, sticky rice and sticky rice pudding.

Hong Kong and Taiwan sold butterfly puffs, ice tea, pear milk tea and other nice things.

The Korean stall sold meat with rice and dumplings.

Italy sold spaghetti and lasagne.

In the afternoon, the Chinese lion came in and did a dance in the main quadrangle.

A chinese band consisting of two members playing the elecric guitar, one member playing the keyboard, one on the drums and one singing. The band played 5 Japanese songs, most of them off anime series.

The day was filled with laughter, smiles and happiness.

It did rain, but that didn’t put the students down.

My Speech

May 22nd, 2006 by vivi in Uncategorized · 3 Comments

Well when Mr. Oregan announced that we would be doing our speech on the third week, I seriously was already nervous. I hated speeches, you have to stand infront of your fellow students AND not to mention the teacher.Your legs would be shaking like a errupting volcano and your hands would be shaking. Your voice would go up and down, high and low.

So when I went home I thought about what I wanted my speech to be about, Mr Oregan already had a few subjects that we could talk about but they weren’t compulsory.

I finally made my decision to go with Food Poisoning.

I thought I had to do my speech but when I went up it was 3 minutes until second period so Mr Oregan said,”Say your speech next period.”

On the morning that I had to do my speech, I was already worrying on how I would do. To calm myself down, I took a few deep breaths.

That day, I was the first to say my speech, so I got out of my chair confidently and gave my class a smile. My speech went something like this:

“Good afternoon Mr Oregan,Ms Dundas and fellow students. Today my speech is about Food Poisoning.

Have you ever eaten something and felt sick? That might have been food poisoning. Food poisoning happens when you consume a contaminated food or drink. It is a common, usually mild and sometimes deadly illness. The typical symtoms of food poisoning include nausea, vomitting, abdominal cramping and diarrhea that come on suddenly(within 48 hours.)

There are many germs that can cause food to be contaminated.

Sometimes groups of people can be affected by food poisoning by eating at a restuarant or party.

Did you know that 20 percent of food poisoning happens at home?

You cant see, taste or smell bacteria. Bacteria lives everywhere from volcanoes to the Arctic.Sometimes in school, your sandwiches can turn warm. If this happens, don’t eat it. Bacteria grows and spreads fast in hot temperatures.

So how can food poisoning be treated?

Well, treatments vary because food poisoning can be caused by many different germs.Just go to your doctor and he or she will discuss the treatment with you depending on which germ has made you sick.

So how can you prevent food poisoning?

Well, safe food preparation is one and washing your hands for at least 20 seconds with warm water and soap is another.

The World Health Organization had developed

“Ten Golden Rules for Safe Food Preparation”

These are as followed:

1.Choose foods processed for safety.

2.Cook food thoroughly

3.Eat cooked foods immediately.

4.Store cooked foods carefully.

5.Reheat cooked food thoroughly.

6.Avoid contact between raw food and cooked food.

7.Wash hands repeatedly.

8.Keep all kitchen surfaces clean.

9.Protect food from insects, rodents and other animals.

10.Use Safe Water

Thank you for listening to my speech.”

So that was my speech, after saying that I felt much better I felt like I didnt have to worry about it now!!!

Public Schools banned from expo.

May 11th, 2006 by vivi in Uncategorized · 2 Comments

A public school in Sydney has been prevented from marketing itself as a competitive, alternative to private schools.

The principal of Blacktown Girls’ High School,Edward Gavin said he went to an education expo last year to show the school’s pride in its reputation.

He thought he would come back to that expo again this year, but the NSW Department of Education asked him to drop out, saying it would represent more than 200 public schools instead.

So this was Mr.Gavin’s reply,”We were involved in the expo last year. It was good seeing public schools there amid all the private schools,” Mr Gavin said. “But this year I respected the fact that they [the Department of Education] want to show a corporate perspective.”

The runner of this expo,Linda Vining has complained to the department about public schools being banned from taking out individual booths costing $1100.

Dr Vining said three schools including Blacktown Girls’ High School had been banned from going to the expo.

The president of the NSW Secondary Principals Council,Chris Bonnor, said that most schools didnt want to take part.

A spokesman at the Department of Education said that public schools would show up,surely to this year’s expo.

The Department of Education supports schools marketing themselves  within their local areas as part of an effort to arrest the drift of students from public to independent schools.

Me Turned Green!

March 30th, 2006 by vivi in Uncategorized · 2 Comments

Imagine, i’ve been turned green!

Wow! I couldn’t believe that it was a flaming 40 degrees celsius.

I walked slowly to a close-by corner shop and wanted to get something cold, so I decided I would get an ice-cream.

I decided to get a Goey-Choc mint paddlepop. The cost was $1.00, which was a reasonable price.

Suddenly, this 3 year-old looking boy was running around, playing tip with his sister. He turned a sharp corner and bumped into me as I was unwrapping the ice-cream. All of the contents dripped down on me. Leaving me feeling sticky all over!!!

What was worse was that the corner shop was having its roof painted green. As I walked I was brushing off the ice-cream with my hands and my shoulder hit the ladder, that the man was standing on and he was carrying a bucket full of green paint. So, I came home looking very green.

It’s not easy being this colour, when everyone else is normal! People look at you like you’re some sort of alien from outer space.

My life is going to be hard being green. Even my parents and friends think I look weird. I think they’re scared of me!!!!

My First Day Of School

March 30th, 2006 by vivi in Uncategorized · 2 Comments

My first day of school was great,I came to school early at half past 8. I met up with my friends. They were all so excited, some of them had worried faces on!

We were gladly welcomed by the teachers and other students.

We could see the difference between the senior boys and girls and the junior boys and girls. The senior boys had a blue shirt on, while the junior boys had a white shirt on. The senior girls wore a blue shirt and a skirt, while the junior girls wore a blue and white dress.

The first thing we did was wait for the 8.45 bell to go off. When it finally did, all the year 7 new kids were wondering around, trying to find their roll call classes, including me!

The first period was science. we did some prac science experiments with Mrs Halloren.

All the other periods, I forgot since we’ve changed our timetables.

For recess, my friends and I sat near the canteen. The sun was in our eyes so we decided to move ourselves and watch the handball games.

Lunch was interesting, as we went around the school trying to find a new place to sit. In the end, we sat in the year 7 area, with the other year 7’s!

The first day was very tiring in the end, it was nothing like primary school. High school, you get to walk around much more.

The first day of school was a Tuesday, so Mr. Myers called the year 7’s in to go to the hall. He talked to us about the early finish Tuesdays we had from now on. He said what time the buses left and other things.

We left school at 2.30 and I went home with my friend named Tiffany!

St. Patrick’s Day!

March 16th, 2006 by vivi in Uncategorized · 2 Comments

St.Patrick’s Day is a day of green. It is a Roman Catholic feast day that honours St.Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. St. Patrick was a man born in Wales about AD 385. When he was 16, he was sold into slavery by a bunch of gangsters that raided his village.

After six years, he escaped from slavery and went to Gaul where he studied in the monastery under St. Germain for 12 years. During his schooling, he became aware that his aim was to convert the pagans to Christianity.

Patrick was quite good at winning converts. In Patrick’s life, he was arrested a few times but managed to escape. He travelled around Ireland, establishing monasteries across the country. Schools and churches were built by him to, to try to convert Irish to a Christianity country.

He died on the 17th of March in AD 461.That day has been known as St. Patrick Day ever since.

There are many traditions one is that when a classmate doesn’t wear green on this day,the other classmates pinch him or her.

Many people will be eating Irish food for example, Irish Stew and Corned Beef and cabbage.People will be wearing shamrocks on their caps, while children wear tricoloured badges. Some girls will wear green ribbons in their hair.People celebrate by drinking beer.Shamrocks symbolise the Trinity, that is the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

St. Patrick’s Day custon came to America in 1737.In this year, Boston publicly celebrated this occasion.

So why do they wear green?

They wear green because according to the Irish folklore, wearing green was thought to be the favourite colour of the Good People.

One reason why St.Patrick’s Day might have been so popular,is that it is just a few days from the first day of Spring.
